What is changing?
The Beitragsbemessungsgrenze is the maximum income used for a contribution calculation. Income above the relevant ceiling does not create more contributions in that branch.
The annual compulsory-insurance threshold for health insurance is a different figure. Crossing it can affect whether an employee may choose voluntary statutory or private cover; it is not the same as the contribution ceiling.
The permanent salary and health-insurance guides use the same central fact records shown here.
When does it take effect?
The 2026 thresholds apply from 1 January 2026. Payroll normally applies them automatically, but insurance status can require an individual assessment.
Who is affected?
- Employees with earnings near or above a statutory contribution ceiling.
- Employers and payroll teams calculating social-insurance deductions.
- Employees reviewing whether the health-insurance compulsory threshold affects their insurance options.
What do you need to do?
- Compare the contributory gross pay and deductions on the payslip with the relevant 2026 ceiling.
- Do not treat the health contribution ceiling and compulsory-insurance threshold as interchangeable.
- Ask the Krankenkasse or payroll team to explain an unexpected insurance-status or deduction change.
- Use the salary calculator only as an estimate and confirm payroll figures with the responsible insurer or employer.
Example
Example
Earnings above a contribution ceiling
If gross employment income exceeds a branch’s contribution ceiling, that branch generally calculates contributions only up to its ceiling. Other deductions and tax still follow their own rules, so the payslip does not become deduction-free above the threshold.
Example only, for illustration. Your own amount depends on your circumstances.
