Quick answer

Employees normally have wage tax withheld through payroll using ELStAM and a tax class; the annual income-tax result is settled through an assessment where a return is required or filed voluntarily. Social-insurance contributions are separate from tax. Self-employed people pay tax on profit under the rules that apply to their activity and may also deal with VAT and trade tax. Start from your income type, then follow the specialist guide rather than treating every deduction as the same tax.

Important

This page provides general information and does not replace professional tax or financial advice. Amounts and thresholds change; check the official source before relying on a figure.

The route depends on how the income arises.

2. Employees: gross salary, withholding and tax class

Your employer withholds Lohnsteuer from gross pay using the electronic ELStAM data and your tax class. The class changes monthly withholding and cash flow; it does not create a separate final annual tax rate. Pension, health, unemployment and long-term care contributions also reduce net pay, but they are social insurance rather than income tax.

Use the one canonical gross-to-net calculator for an estimate, then read the tax-class guide for the payroll category and the salary guide for the deduction structure.

3. The annual tax return

Some people must file, while many straightforward employees can file voluntarily. A return brings together annual income and allowable deductions; the Finanzamt then issues a Steuerbescheid. ELSTER is the official filing portal.

Deadlines depend on the tax year, whether filing is mandatory and whether an adviser is involved. Use the tax-return guide for the current dated deadline facts rather than a timeless rule of thumb.

4. Steuer-ID is not the same as a business tax number

The BZSt assigns the personal Steuer-ID, normally for life. A Finanzamt can issue a Steuernummer for a tax case. A business may also need an USt-IdNr for VAT identification, particularly in qualifying EU transactions. Entering one identifier where another is requested causes avoidable delays.

5. Self-employed people and businesses

Individuals generally start from business profit, not revenue or a “freelance salary.” VAT, trade tax and company tax depend on the activity, legal form and transaction. Freiberufler and Gewerbe also follow different registration routes.

The cash-planning calculator deliberately asks you for tax and insurance reserve assumptions instead of pretending to calculate an individual assessment.

6. Use official tools for the final check

Third-party calculators are useful for planning, not for filing or payroll certification. Use the BMF calculator as an official cross-check and ELSTER for tax-administration forms. Seek a Steuerberater for international income, a company, VAT complexity, property income or material uncertainty.
