Gross and net salary in Germany

The number in your contract is not the number in your account. Between them sit income tax, the solidarity surcharge, possibly church tax, and four social contributions.

Quick answer

Gross salary is reduced by income tax, the solidarity surcharge above a threshold, church tax if you are registered with a tax-collecting religious community, and contributions to health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance. Roughly 60 to 65 per cent of a mid-range gross salary typically arrives in your account, and the share changes with income and tax class.

Important

This page provides general information and does not replace professional tax or financial advice. Amounts and thresholds change; check the official source before relying on a figure.

1. What comes off the top

Income tax is withheld monthly by your employer according to your tax class. The solidarity surcharge applies above a threshold. Church tax is only deducted if you are registered as a member of a religious community that collects it, and the rate differs between federal states.

Then come the four social contributions: health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance. Employers pay roughly matching amounts that never appear as your money but are part of what employing you costs.

2. Why higher earners keep a larger share

Social contributions stop being charged above annual ceilings. Above those thresholds, extra gross salary attracts income tax but no further health or pension contributions, so the net share of each additional euro improves.

This is why the percentage retained is not a constant and why comparing two salaries by a single rule of thumb misleads.

3. Reading a German payslip

A payslip lists gross, each deduction with its rate, and the net transfer. It also shows cumulative figures for the year, which is what a tax return works from.

Check that your tax class and any children are recorded correctly. An incorrect class does not change what you owe over the year, but it changes your monthly cash flow for months before a return corrects it.

German employers normally pay salary by SEPA transfer to the IBAN you provide. Check the IBAN carefully during onboarding and tell payroll promptly if you change accounts.

4. Talking about salary

German job offers are quoted in gross annual or gross monthly terms, sometimes across 12 or 13 payments. Clarify which, and whether bonuses are contractual or discretionary, before comparing two offers.

Our salary calculator gives an estimate of the net figure, using demonstration tax logic rather than the official tables.

5. Frequently asked questions

For a single employee in tax class 1 on a mid-range salary, roughly 60 to 65 per cent is typical. It falls as income rises within the contribution ceilings and improves in class 3.

It is only charged if you are registered as a member of a tax-collecting religious community. If you are not, it is not deducted.

Some contracts spread annual pay over 13 payments or add a contractual bonus. It changes the monthly figure but not the annual total, so compare annual gross.
