Quick answer
Important
1. Gewerbeanmeldung
Register a commercial activity with the Gewerbeamt or responsible municipal service at the relevant start. The form asks for identity, location, start date and an accurate business description. Fees vary by municipality, so no single national fee is stated.
Regulated activities can require permits or evidence before or alongside registration. Registration does not certify immigration permission or tax classification.

2. Tax registration through ELSTER
Founders normally transmit the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung within one month of opening the business or starting the independent activity. It contains forecasts, accounting details and VAT choices. The Finanzamt then issues the relevant Steuernummer.

3. Tax numbers are a separate question
Business registration and tax identifiers are connected, but they are not the same task. The dedicated business tax-number guide explains which number identifies the person, which number the Finanzamt assigns after the ELSTER questionnaire and when a VAT ID is needed.
4. IHK, HWK and permits
Gewerbeanmeldung can trigger contact from IHK or Handwerkskammer. Craft activities may require Handwerksrolle entry or qualification, but not every business requires a Meister title.
Restaurants/food, transport, security, health and financial services are examples where additional authorities may be involved. Check the specific activity rather than relying on a generic list.
5. What comes after registration
- Review Finanzamt letters and advance-payment notices
- Confirm chamber and Berufsgenossenschaft status
- Set up invoice numbering, records and VAT handling
- Tell health insurer and check pension status
- Update registrations when activity, address or legal form changes
6. Frequently asked questions
