Quick answer
Important
1. Visa, permit, and the office that issues it
The visa in your passport is an entry document with a limited validity. The residence permit replaces it and is normally issued as a card. It is granted by the Ausländerbehörde of the city where you live, not by the embassy that gave you the visa.
Registering your address is a precondition for almost everything here, so Anmeldung usually comes first, then the permit appointment.
2. Permits are bound to a purpose
A permit issued for study is not a permit to work full-time, and one issued for a specific employer may restrict changing jobs. The conditions are printed on the card or in an accompanying sheet, and they matter: working beyond what your permit allows has consequences for future applications.
Switching purpose — from study to work, for example — is a formal change you apply for, and whether it is possible depends on the category and your circumstances.

3. Renewing on time
Apply for renewal well before expiry, because appointment availability is the constraint. In many cities you request the appointment online and are given a date weeks or months later, and an application filed in time protects your status while it is processed.
Keep proof that you applied. If your card expires while the office is still deciding, that receipt is what demonstrates you acted in time.
4. Where it leads
Temporary permits can lead to a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) after a qualifying period, subject to conditions such as pension contributions and language. The EU Blue Card has its own, generally shorter, path.
Because the qualifying conditions change and depend on your category, treat the timeline as something to confirm with the authority rather than to plan around from a forum post.
5. Frequently asked questions
No. The visa lets you enter; the residence permit lets you stay and is issued in Germany by the local foreigners’ office.
Apply before expiry. A timely application generally protects your status while the decision is pending, and the confirmation you receive is the evidence of that.
It depends on your permit. Some allow it freely, others require approval. Check the conditions attached to your own card before accepting an offer.
