Credit Cards in Germany

Understand credit cards, debit cards and which type of card you actually have.

Quick answer

Visa and Mastercard are payment networks, not proof that a card provides credit. A debit card takes money from the connected account; a charge card collects purchases for a later statement that is normally settled in full; a revolving card may let a balance continue with interest. Check the card type, repayment default, interest, fees and hotel or rental-car deposit rules before relying on it.

Important

Card fees, interest rates, repayment settings, insurance and acceptance conditions change frequently. Provider names below are educational examples, not recommendations. Verify the current price list and terms before applying or borrowing.

1. The card type matters more than the logo

Visa, Mastercard and American Express operate payment networks. The issuer decides whether a Visa or Mastercard is debit, charge, revolving credit or prepaid. Read the word printed on the card and the product terms rather than calling every internationally branded card a credit card.

A Girocard is a German debit-card system connected to a current account. It remains common for everyday domestic payments, but online, overseas and mobile-wallet use depends on the particular card and any additional network function.

How the common card types settle a purchase.
Card typeWhen is money taken?Credit facility?
GirocardUsually directly from the accountNo
Visa / Mastercard DebitDirectly or quickly from the accountNo
Charge credit cardPurchases collected and billed later, normally in fullDelayed settlement
Revolving credit cardBalance can potentially be carried with interestYes
Prepaid cardSpend a balance loaded in advanceNo traditional credit

2. Real debit-card examples

ING’s Visa Card for its Girokonto and DKB’s standard Visa card are Visa Debit products under current conditions. N26 states that its cards are Mastercard Debit. Commerzbank also offers a Mastercard Debit product. Transactions use the connected account rather than accumulating as a traditional credit-card bill.

These examples explain classification only. Included cards, physical-card charges, ATM rules and account eligibility can change, so use the provider source for current conditions.

3. Examples of credit cards available in Germany

The DKB Visa Kreditkarte is an optional credit card linked to a DKB Girokonto. Commerzbank’s ClassicKreditkarte is an example issued by a traditional bank; its Gold and other levels have different conditions.

American Express Blue and Gold are charge-card examples: purchases are grouped for later settlement. Gold is a premium product with a recurring fee and bundled services, whose value depends on what you actually use.

Advanzia’s Gebührenfrei Mastercard Gold is a standalone revolving-card example. “No annual fee” does not mean every use is free: review interest, repayment, cash-withdrawal treatment, foreign-use rules and late-payment consequences.

Neutral examples, not a ranking. Prices remain on the provider pages.

Credit is not extra income

A credit card can help with travel, hotels, rental cars and online purchases, but debt becomes expensive when a balance is not repaid under the card’s terms. Do not borrow merely because a limit is available.

4. Check how the card is repaid

Some cards automatically collect the full statement balance. Others permit or default to partial repayment. Partial repayment leaves debt outstanding and can produce substantial interest charges.

Before the first purchase, find the repayment percentage, annual interest rate, statement date and due date. If full automatic repayment is available and affordable, decide deliberately whether to activate it rather than accepting an unfamiliar default.

Check the repayment default

“Credit card” does not tell you whether the statement is collected in full. Confirm the percentage, interest rate, statement date and due date in the actual contract.

5. Hotel and rental-car deposits

Hotels and rental-car companies may place a temporary authorisation or security deposit on a card. On debit, that amount can reduce the money available in your current account. On a credit card, it can reduce the available credit limit until released.

Acceptance and deposit policies vary. Some rental companies accept debit cards, while others require a credit card in the driver’s name or impose different deposit and insurance conditions. Check the company’s card and deposit requirements before booking.

Example

€600 hotel booking

Debit card: €600 may be taken or reserved against the money available in the current account.
Credit card: €600 may enter the later statement or reduce the available credit limit, depending on the card.
A separate temporary deposit may also be authorised and released only after checkout.

Illustrative only; the hotel and issuer set the actual authorisation rules.

Example

Why a real credit card can sometimes matter

A traveller books a rental car. The company requires a card in the driver’s name and reserves a security deposit. Some companies accept debit cards and others apply different conditions. The traveller checks the exact card and deposit requirement before paying for the booking.

Not every rental company requires a credit card.

6. What should you compare?

Compare the contract mechanics before rewards or card colour. Benefits have value only when you would otherwise pay for and use them.

  • Annual or monthly card fee
  • Debit, charge, revolving or prepaid settlement
  • Foreign-currency and ATM withdrawal fees
  • Interest rate and interest-free period
  • Whether full automatic repayment is available
  • Whether partial repayment is the default
  • Travel insurance and the exclusions and excess
  • Hotel and rental-car deposit suitability
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Additional-card and replacement-card fees
  • Customer support and emergency replacement

7. Credit checks and financial safety

A genuine credit facility normally involves an affordability or SCHUFA assessment. A debit or prepaid card does not provide the same borrowing facility. Do not submit repeated applications without understanding what product and check each provider performs.

Protect card details, approve only transactions you recognise, and report loss or unauthorised use promptly through the issuer’s official channel. A reward or insurance bundle never compensates for unaffordable borrowing.

8. Frequently asked questions

No. Visa is a network. Check whether the issuer labels the card debit, credit, charge or prepaid and when transactions leave your money.

A charge card normally settles the collected statement in full. A revolving card can carry part of the balance forward with interest, depending on the contract and repayment setting.

A hotel or rental-car authorisation can block money in the connected account, leaving less available for rent, direct debits and other spending until release.

No. Requirements vary by company, location, vehicle and tariff. Check the booking terms for card type, cardholder name and deposit before paying.

No. Interest, cash, foreign-currency, late-payment and other fees can still apply.

Understand the card type and repayment terms, pay by the due date, and use full automatic settlement where appropriate and affordable. Some transactions may attract interest under special rules, so read the price list.
