Quick answer

Local transport associations set their own zones and ticket rules. The Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month in 2026 and covers participating local and regional transport nationwide by subscription; it does not generally cover ICE, IC or EC services.

1. Local networks and zones

Who makes this rule?

Provider-specific · check the operator or contract conditions

Each region has a transport association that sets fares across all local operators. One ticket is valid on every mode inside the zones you bought, which makes changing from a tram to a train straightforward.

Purchase and validation rules differ by network and product. Some paper tickets need stamping, some are already time-stamped, and mobile tickets can have an activation delay. Read the local operator’s conditions before boarding rather than assuming one nationwide validation rule.

2. The nationwide monthly ticket

The Deutschlandticket is a monthly subscription valid on participating local and regional transport across Germany. Compare it with your local pass and actual travel pattern; it is not automatically the least expensive option for every user.

It does not generally cover long-distance ICE, IC or EC trains. Long-distance fare conditions, train binding and cancellation depend on the ticket selected.

3. Long-distance travel

Long-distance tickets are cheapest well in advance and tied to a specific train when discounted. Flexible fares cost more but let you take any service. Delays are common enough that connection times matter when you plan.

4. Frequently asked questions

Compare €63 per month with your local pass and expected journeys. The nationwide regional validity can be valuable, but a discounted local, student, social or employer ticket may cost less.

Rules vary by region, and young children usually travel free. Check the local transport association’s conditions, because the age limits differ.
