Quick answer

Search the 116117 physician directory or your insurer’s directory, check whether the practice accepts your insurance, and ask how appointments are booked. A Hausarzt is a useful first point of contact; call 116117 for urgent non-life-threatening help and 112 for emergencies.

Important

This is general information about navigating German services, not medical advice or a diagnosis. For symptoms or treatment decisions, contact a qualified clinician. Call 112 for a life-threatening emergency.

1. Hausarzt, specialist and dentist

A Hausarzt treats common problems, coordinates longer-term care and can issue referrals. Specialists focus on a field; dentists operate separately. Paediatricians (Kinderärzte) provide primary care for children.

Some specialists accept direct bookings, while others or particular treatments require a referral. Ask the practice and your insurer before the visit.

The German words you will see

Hausarzt
General practitioner or primary-care doctor.
Facharzt
Specialist doctor.
Überweisung
Referral document for another practice or specialist.

3. Appointments, cancellations and waiting times

Practices may book by phone, website or app and may set aside acute consultation hours. Arrive on time and cancel early if you cannot attend. A missed private or self-pay appointment can sometimes be charged if the practice lawfully reserved the time.

If no practice accepts you, ask your insurer for help and use 116117’s appointment service where its eligibility and referral rules are met.

4. At the appointment

Show the eGK and state your symptoms, medicines, allergies and relevant history. Ask for plain-language explanations and an interpreter if needed; do not rely on children to interpret sensitive medical information.

Before any self-pay service, ask whether it is medically necessary, whether GKV covers an alternative and for the written price.

5. Urgent care and emergencies

If it can safely wait for normal hours, contact a practice. For urgent non-life-threatening care outside hours, call 116117. For a life-threatening emergency or risk of lasting injury, call 112.

6. Frequently asked questions

Generally yes, but the practice must accept your insurance and new patients; some care pathways require referrals.

Use directory language filters, then confirm directly because profiles can be incomplete.

Contact the practice promptly. It may accept later proof from your insurer; otherwise it can invoice you if proof is not supplied within the required period.
