Quick answer

Start with the decision you need. For university admission, check how your school or degree is treated in anabin and the uni-assist admission checker, then confirm the programme’s own requirements. For a regulated profession, use Recognition in Germany to find the competent authority. A database result is evidence for the process, not an admission or visa guarantee.

Important

Admission and recognition outcomes depend on your individual certificates and educational history. Use the official databases below to check your own qualification, and confirm requirements with the university’s international office in writing.

1. Three different recognition questions

University admission, professional recognition and immigration are separate decisions. A university decides admission to its programme. A competent professional authority decides whether a regulated profession can be practised. The immigration authority or German mission decides the residence route.

One positive result does not automatically decide the others. Keep the purpose of every document clear when you ask for an assessment.

Use the service that matches the decision you need.

2. Checking eligibility for university study

For a Bachelor’s route, the key concept is the Hochschulzugangsberechtigung: whether your school-leaving certificate and any prior study provide direct, subject-restricted or preparatory access. The answer depends on the exact certificate and educational history, not nationality alone.

For a Master’s route, recognition of the Bachelor’s institution is only the beginning. The programme may separately require a related subject, particular modules or ECTS, a minimum grade and specified language evidence.

3. Documents and application route

Expect the complete certificate, subject and grade transcript, the school or university grading system, certified copies and translations where required. Names and dates should match across documents; explain a change rather than leaving an unexplained mismatch.

Some universities use uni-assist, some accept direct applications and some require a preliminary review document before a direct application. Follow the programme’s current instructions rather than assuming one channel for all German universities.

  1. Identify the exact decision

Admission, professional practice and a visa are separate processes.

  2. Check the official database

Search the exact country, certificate, institution and qualification.

  3. Read the programme rules

Confirm subject, grade, language, document and deadline requirements.

  4. Prepare certified evidence

Follow the recipient’s rules for copies, translations and verification.

  5. Keep the written result

Save the assessment, VPD, admission decision or recognition notice for later processes.

4. Professional recognition and Ausbildung

Regulated professions require recognition or permission before you can work under the protected professional title. Recognition in Germany identifies the competent authority and procedure for the occupation and place of work.

For Ausbildung, the training company and vocational school assess the application, while the visa authority applies immigration rules. A foreign school certificate can still need evidence or assessment, but there is no single nationwide promise that one certificate guarantees an Ausbildung place.

5. What happens after the check

A direct-admission result lets you apply; it does not reserve a place. A Studienkolleg result means you follow the preparatory route and normally pass the Feststellungsprüfung before applying to the relevant subject area. A professional recognition notice may grant equivalence, identify compensatory measures or refuse equivalence with reasons.

Use the result in the next process—application, recognition measure or visa—and keep checking the receiving organisation’s deadline and document format.
