Quick answer
Important
1. The three realistic routes
There is no single path from Nigeria into German education. There are three, and they suit genuinely different situations. Choosing between them on the basis of prestige rather than fit is the most common early mistake.
| Route | What it involves | Suits you if |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s degree | Three to four years, mostly taught in German | You have finished school and want an academic qualification |
| Master’s degree | Two years, wide English-taught selection | You already hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree |
| Ausbildung | Two to three and a half years, paid from day one | You want to work and earn while training, and have German at around B1 to B2 |
The Ausbildung route is consistently overlooked by international applicants, and it is the only one of the three that pays you while you train.
Do not dismiss the Ausbildung route
2. Step one: how your qualification is assessed
Everything else depends on this, and it cannot be answered by nationality. Applicants from Nigeria typically hold WASSCE or NECO senior secondary certificate, or an A-Level or IB qualification. What that entitles you to in Germany depends on the specific certificate, the institution, the year and sometimes your subject combination and grades.
There are three possible outcomes, and you need to know which is yours before you spend money on applications.
- Direct admission: you can apply straight to a degree programme
- Direct admission restricted to certain subject groups
- Studienkolleg first: a preparatory year and an assessment examination before you can enter a degree

3. Step two: check whether APS applies
Whether an APS certificate is required for applicants who studied in Nigeria has changed over time, and we will not assert a position that might be out of date on something this consequential.
Check it as your second action, immediately after the qualification check. If it does apply, it gates both your university application and your visa, and it takes weeks to months to obtain.

4. Step three: the language certificate
Which certificate you need follows from the route, and the test dates book out, so this belongs early in the plan rather than at the end.
For a German-taught degree you need a recognised academic certificate at roughly C1: TestDaF, DSH, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule or Goethe C2. For an English-taught programme you need IELTS or TOEFL at the score that programme sets. For an Ausbildung, most companies look for around B1 as a floor and are more comfortable at B2.
A Studienkolleg generally requires B1 to B2 for admission, and many run their own entrance examination in German and mathematics.
| Route | Certificate normally required |
|---|---|
| German-taught Bachelor’s or Master’s | TestDaF, DSH, telc C1 Hochschule or Goethe C2 |
| English-taught Master’s | IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, at the programme’s score |
| Studienkolleg | German at roughly B1 to B2, plus the college’s entrance test |
| Ausbildung | German at roughly B1 to B2, set by the employer |

5. Step four: find programmes and apply
There is no single national application system for international applicants. Depending on the university and subject, your application goes through uni-assist, directly to the institution, or through Hochschulstart for nationally restricted subjects such as medicine.
Search programmes
Hochschulkompass is the authoritative directory of German programmes. For English-taught options, search the DAAD International Programmes database alongside it.
Check each programme’s own requirements
Subject fit, minimum grade, required credits, language certificate and deadline differ per programme, sometimes within one university. The programme’s admission regulations are the binding source.
Order certified copies and translations
Certified copies and translations by an officially recognised translator are normally required. Universities frequently ask for verification of WAEC or NECO results directly with the examining board, in addition to certified copies.
Apply through the right channel
uni-assist for many universities, directly for others. uni-assist charges per application and needs several weeks to process documents.
For an Ausbildung, apply to companies instead
There is no central admissions process. You apply to employers directly, roughly a year ahead of an August or September start.
6. Step five: funding and the blocked account
Public universities generally charge no tuition, only a semester contribution. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students tuition and Bavaria has introduced fees that vary by institution.
The larger financial requirement is the visa. For commencing studies in 2026, the standard proof is €11,904 for 12 months (€992 per month), normally through a blocked account or an accepted alternative such as a qualifying scholarship.
Tuition at state universities
Generally none for Bachelor’s and most Master’s programmes
Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, and Bavaria has introduced fees that vary by institution. Private universities charge their own fees throughout.

7. Step six: the visa
The student visa application follows the admission letter. Appointment waiting times at some missions are the longest single delay in the whole process, so book the appointment the day your admission arrives rather than after assembling everything else.
The visa gets you into Germany and is valid for a few months. The residence permit is a separate document issued by the local foreigners’ authority after you arrive, and you must apply for it before the visa expires.
Who may qualify
You may be eligible if the following apply to your situation. This is not a decision:
- You hold an admission letter, or a conditional admission for a Studienkolleg or language course
- You can prove funding for your first year, by blocked account, scholarship or accepted alternative
- You have health insurance that German enrolment will accept
- You hold the language certificate your programme requires
- Where it applies to you, you hold a valid APS certificate

8. Step seven: arriving
German administration runs on a dependency chain, and the first fortnight is about clearing it in the right order. Nearly everything requires your address registration certificate, which requires a landlord confirmation, which requires somewhere to live.
- Get the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord: written confirmation you moved in
- Register your address (Anmeldung) at the Bürgeramt within the local deadline
- Keep several copies of the registration certificate
- Open a German bank account, which normally needs that certificate
- Complete enrolment and pay the semester contribution
- Apply for the residence permit before your visa expires
- Register for the broadcasting contribution, or claim exemption if eligible
The German words you will see
- Anmeldung
- Registering your address with the local authority. Legally required, and the key that unlocks nearly everything else.
- Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
- Confirmation from your landlord that you have moved into the address. You cannot register without it.
- Ausländerbehörde
- The local foreigners’ authority, which issues your residence permit once you are in Germany.
- Semesterbeitrag
- The semester contribution: an administrative and student-body fee, usually including a transport ticket. Not tuition.

9. After you qualify
Germany makes staying after a German qualification deliberately straightforward. Graduates can obtain a residence permit to look for qualified work, and those who completed an Ausbildung are in a similarly strong position, with the added advantage that a German vocational qualification needs no recognition procedure.
Once employed, the route runs through a work permit or EU Blue Card, and then to permanent residence. Learning German to B1 shortens some qualifying periods and materially widens the jobs open to you.
- A post-study residence permit to seek qualified employment
- An EU Blue Card, with a reduced salary threshold for graduates within three years of qualifying
- Qualified employment after an Ausbildung, as a recognised basis for staying
- Permanent residence after a qualifying period, with study time counting partially
10. Frequently asked questions
That depends on your specific certificate, the institution, the year and sometimes your grades and subject combination, not on your country. Some applicants get direct access, some access to certain subjects only, and some need a Studienkolleg first. Look your own case up in anabin and have uni-assist confirm it in writing before you spend money on applications.
The requirement has changed over time for applicants from Nigeria, so check your own position rather than relying on a summary. If it does apply, it takes weeks to months and gates both your application and your visa.
For a German-taught degree, a recognised academic certificate at roughly C1: TestDaF, DSH, telc C1 Hochschule or Goethe C2. For an English-taught Master’s, IELTS or TOEFL instead. For a Studienkolleg or an Ausbildung, roughly B1 to B2.
Public universities generally charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of roughly 70 to 430 €. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students tuition and Bavaria has fees that vary by institution. You still have to fund your living costs, and prove you can before a visa is issued.
Roughly a year of living costs, normally in a blocked account. The figure is derived from the maximum German student support rate, reviewed annually, and applied by the mission handling your application. Confirm it with that mission before transferring money.
For many people it is the most realistic of the three, and it is consistently overlooked. It pays a training salary from the start, leads to a nationally recognised qualification, and because that qualification is German it needs no recognition procedure. The main requirement is German at around B1 to B2.
Yes, within a limit that non-EU students must respect as a condition of their residence permit, counted in working days as well as hours. It will not fund a degree on its own and cannot replace the visa proof of funds.
Yes. Graduates of German universities and people who complete a German Ausbildung can obtain a residence permit to look for qualified work, then move to a work permit or EU Blue Card, and later to permanent residence.
You do not need one. Every step here can be done directly, and the official tools are free or low-cost: anabin, uni-assist, Hochschulkompass and the DAAD databases. Where an agent contradicts an official source, the official source is right. Be particularly wary of anyone guaranteeing admission or a visa, since neither can be guaranteed by a third party.
